Position Overview

The Network and Telecommunications Office at Rhode Island College is seeking an individual to design, program and maintain server hardware and software in support of College-wide information systems.

Primary Purpose

Design, program and maintain server hardware and software in support of College-wide information systems.

Essential Duties

•Plan, configure, install and maintain server hardware and software.

•Respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours as needed.

•Design, program, maintain and/or implement new software and modifications.

•Develop procedures and operations and installation documentation for installed systems and applications.

•Consult with and advise application development personnel.

•Analyze production and systems performance for determination of problem areas.

•Establish standards for the use of server-based applications.

•Determine alternatives for various configurations of operating systems.

•Plan and conduct training courses in use and operation of installation software.

•Coordinate vendor activities.

•Perform duties of Technical Programmer.

•Maintain an active commitment to professional development.

•Train and supervise student employees and lower level network/telecom technicians as assigned and assist in evaluating training needs.

Assist in:

•Coordinating activities with other sections.

•Establishing and enforcing standards and procedures.

•Assessing technical needs of department.

•Planning, designing, and/or installing and maintaining LAN/WAN’S.

•Analyzing current and planned network usage.

•Technically evaluating applications packages.

•Evaluating and recommending systems software and hardware.

•Estimating resource requirements for developing specialized software.

•Establishing and maintaining all software systems security.

Occasional Duties

Perform other related duties as required or as assigned by the Manager, Network and Telecommunications – Technical Services.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

•Demonstrated competence with network and server technology; personal computer hardware, software and peripherals, and the uses of information technology to support organizational objectives.

•Strong interpersonal skills.

•Ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, administrators, students and colleagues.

•Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree.

Experience: Minimum of six year’s experience in the design, installation and maintenance of computer systems of which two years’ experience shall be in the area of computer technical support.

Preferred Qualifications

•Bachelor’s degree in computer science or closely related field.

•Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE).

•Hands-on experience with Cisco products and/or Unix/Linux;

•Demonstrated ability in providing a high level of system reliability and availability.

Environmental Conditions

The position requires significant lifting, moving, and/or installation of moderately heavy equipment (such as computers) and other related information technology components.
