Position Overview

The Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner invites applications for the full-time position of Simulation Specialist.

The R.I. Nursing Education Center is a shared facility between the RIC and URI nursing programs – as well as Brown University. The nursing education center will feature 133,000 square feet of shared simulation labs, clinical teaching labs, mock hospital areas and classrooms, as well as offices that represent a significant upgrade in teaching technology and learning environments.

The Simulation Specialist is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all simulation equipment at the NEC.

Primary Purpose

Operation and maintenance of all simulation equipment at the NEC.

Essential Duties

• Develop technical proficiency with all aspects of the operation, maintenance, support, troubleshooting, and repair of the NEC simulation equipment.
• Interface with manufacturers regarding troubleshooting equipment and systems problems.
• Implement hardware and software updates.
• Maintain all equipment on a timely basis and ensure that all supplies are ordered and available on a timely basis.
• Maintain cleanliness and order of laboratory rooms and supplies.
• Operate or assist with the operation of simulation equipment for all training sessions as needed.
• Assist Executive Director of RINEC Administration, Manager of Simulation Education Services, and faculty in the development of curriculum and educational materials for all levels of training relative to the NEC.
• Conduct faculty orientation of educators and l earners of simulation training and debriefing techniques.
• Assist faculty in education-related research efforts as designated by the Manager of Simulation Education Services.
• Assist with scheduling and coordination of teaching with the simulation equipment.
• Assist in the set-up of simulation equipment and other l earning technologies to meet needs of faculty and students.
• Operate computer hardware and audio-video recording/capturing systems.
• Identify and implement solutions to problems related to simulation equipment, computer hardware and software in a timely manner.
• Repair and maintain equipment as required or initiate repairs for equipment under warranty.
• Communicate with manufacturers regarding maintenance, repairs, updates, and technology changes.
• Supervise student employees and outside service providers.
• Assist in maintaining reference materials for simulation equipment and related audio-visual and computer hardware and software.
• Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of hardware and software.
• Assist in the development of Quick-Guide reference aids for faculty.

Occasional Duties

• Work non-standard hours as required.
• May require inter-campus travel.
• Other related work as assigned by the Manger of Simulation Education Services.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

• Demonstrated ability to work on multiple activities and a wide variety of clinical simulation technology products and applications simultaneously.
• Familiarity with personal computers, printers, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Experience with grant support software.
• Ability to interact with students, faculty, and staff on a professional level maintaining confidentiality related to patient care and simulation experiences.
• Ability to use video cameras, digital cameras and microphones.
• Proficiency with PC and MAC.
• Requires flexibility in hours worked.
• May require inter-campus travel.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing or healthcare related field.
Experience: One year minimum experience working in a patient care area such as the operating room, critical care area, or other healthcare setting with healthcare technology.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in healthcare/media learning simulation environment.
• Experience in higher education environment.
• Budget and inventory experience.

Environmental Conditions

Office and clinical simulation lab environment. Varied laboratory conditions involving mechanical, electrical, and lifting hazards. May require the lifting of heavy objects (mannequins, equipment, etc.). Requires work with medical equipment including latex based products.
