Position Summary

The individual will teach foundational classes in Cell and Molecular Biology (BIOL 320) or/and Genetics (BIOL 221); teach 100-level introductory biology courses (such as BIOL100, 108, and 111); develop upper level (400+) courses in the instructor’s area of expertise; develop and maintain an active research program in the field of cell biology that engages undergraduate and graduate (MA and Certificate) students; advise students in the biology major; engage in scholarly research and professional activities and participate in College and Departmental activities.

Essential Duties

• Teach foundational classes in Cell and Molecular Biology (BIOL 320) or/and Genetics (BIOL 221)
• Teach 100-level introductory biology courses (such as BIOL100, 108, and 111)
• Develop upper level (400+) courses in the instructor’s area of expertise
• Develop and maintain an active research program in the field of cell biology that engages undergraduate and graduate (MA and Certificate) students
• Advise students in the biology major
• Engage in scholarly research and professional activities
• Participate in College and Departmental activities

Occasional Duties

• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Department Chair

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

• Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
• Effectively use available instructional technology and/or inquiry-based pedagogical methods
• Demonstrated research expertise and ability to work with undergraduates in a laboratory setting

Required Qualifications

Education: Ph.D. in Molecular or Cellular Biology or relevant related field

Experience: Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate instruction and to mentoring student researchers

Preferred Qualifications

• Established record of support of undergraduate and/or graduate research
• Evidence of effective undergraduate teaching
• Experience with nontraditional students and with an ethnically diverse student population
• Demonstrated grant writing skills
Willingness to serve in a faculty leadership role as part of the RIC shared governance model following awarding of tenure.

Environmental Conditions

Faculty members routinely deal with electronic and other scientific equipment and chemicals appropriate to the discipline. Rhode Island College does not have a site license for radioactivity.
