Position Summary

The Health and Physical Education Department at Rhode Island College invites a creative and engaged scholar to join its dynamic team. The successful candidate will be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses focused on improving population health through development and implementation of evidence based community and public health promotion and disease prevention efforts. The candidate must possess a strong commitment to educating and mentoring students.

Utilizing an interdisciplinary and experiential learning approach, the fast growing Bachelor of Science in Community Health and Wellness program of study attracts a diverse array of students who are highly motivated and eager to engage with program faculty and other leaders in the field of community and public health. Major requirements include core courses in community health, program planning, health education and health promotion, epidemiology, biology, nutrition, social and global health perspectives, along with health and interdisciplinary concentration electives. Students complete a practicum and a full-semester internship experience in a community and public health setting. Graduate study includes a M.Ed. in Health Education, school nurse teacher certification pathway, and a new initiative for advanced study in population based community and public health promotion.

This position is specifically targeted to a candidate who can assist with advancing the department’s mission of improving health outcomes and quality of life through preparation of future practitioners and leaders in the community and public health promotion field. Other responsibilities include contributing to robust partnership initiatives between the B.S. in Community Health and Wellness program and community organizations, sustaining interdisciplinary relationships across the college, and advising graduate and undergraduate students.

Essential Duties

-Teach a variety of courses at the undergraduate level in Community and Public Health, Health Promotion, and Health Education, such as
—Program development and evaluation
—Community health
—Practicum in community health
—Internship in community health
—Personal health
—Special topics (e.g., environmental health, women’s health, social media and public health, health communication)
-Teach a variety of courses at the graduate level, such as
—Epidemiology and biostatistics
—Program development, administration, and evaluation
—Pedagogy in public health promotion and health education
—Research design and implementation
—Global health
—Grant writing and administration
-Assist with coordination and supervision of interns in the community health and wellness program.
-Demonstrate excellence in teaching, research and service.
-Advise and mentor prospective and current undergraduate and graduate students.
-Participate in aligning undergraduate and graduate programs with professional standards and initiatives.
-Participate in program accreditation efforts.
-Participate in and contribute to partnership initiatives between the department and community organizations.
-Participate in department, school, and college committees and activities.
-Engage in scholarly endeavors, including publications and presentation.
-Collaborate with faculty members in the department and across the college.

Occasional Duties

-Perform other duties and responsibilities as established in conversations with the department chair and program stakeholders.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

-Comprehensive knowledge of one or more fields related to Community and Public Health, Health Promotion, and Health Education.
-Evidence of successful teaching.
-Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish productive working relationships with colleagues and partner organizations.
-Evidence of effective oral and written communication skills

Required Qualifications

Education: Doctoral Degree in Community and/or Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Education or a related field. ABD will be considered.

Experience: Three years of successful community and/or public health, health promotion, or related experience; demonstrated record of leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

-Higher Education teaching experience.
-Professional experience in diverse settings.
-Experience using technology for teaching, learning and administration.
-Experience with online and hybrid course delivery.
-Professional certification such as CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist) or
CPH (Certified in Public Health)
-Comfort and expertise in interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship.
-Willingness to serve in a faculty leadership role as part of the RIC shared governance model following awarding of tenure.

Environmental Conditions

-Teaching/instruction is performed in traditional classroom settings and field sites.
-Some travel to community partnership sites required.
