The part-time counselor will work not more than 19 hours per week. The 19 hours includes the total number of hours worked during regular business hours and the hours worked during the occasional evenings or Saturdays that are required.

Position Overview

The Rhode Island College Upward Bound Program is a federally-funded program for college-bound rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade high school students. This program is designed to instill in low-income, first-generation students the skills and motivation to increase their high school graduation, college-going, and college graduation rates. Upward Bound is committed to providing equal access and opportunity to students from specific target high schools who meet federal eligibility requirements. The program enhances the intellectual, emotional, character and motivational development of each participant by offering rigorous academic instruction, counseling, support services, and an environment that recognizes individual differences and academic potential. The part-time counselor will: assist staff to promote Upward Bound’s mission; advise a group of newly-admitted ninth and tenth graders by setting short-term and long-term goals relative to Upward Bound’s Personal, Academic, and College Planning Profile (PACPP); develop student engagement activities and workshops; utilize and maintain existing computer programs; maintain appropriate program and student records according to established procedures.

Essential Duties

The part-time counselor will: assist staff to promote Upward Bound’s mission; advise a group of newly-admitted ninth and tenth graders by setting short-term and long-term goals relative to Upward Bound’s Personal, Academic, and College Planning Profile (PACPP); develop student engagement activities and workshops; utilize and maintain existing computer programs; maintain appropriate program and student records according to established procedures.

Occasional Duties

Must be able to work some evenings and some Saturdays, as necessary.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Upward Bound.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

• Excellent organizational skills.
• Strong verbal and written communications skills.
• Ability to work in a fast paced, high performing team environment.
• Knowledge of and ability to utilize computer applications in an educational environment, such as Microsoft Office.
• Proven ability to effectively interact and communicate with a racially and ethnically diverse group of students, alumni, and staff.
• Must be able to arrange transportation for travel to target high schools.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Secondary Education, Human Development, Youth Development, or related field.

Experience:
At least one year of experience counseling/advising adolescents similar to those identified for services (potential first-generation college bound students who come from low-income families and are evaluated to be under-achieving students); experience coordinating educational programs for urban youth.
